ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Numerous studies and articles highlight the benefits of volunteering but in essence, the most important reason to volunteer is Love. The love of sharing knowledge, the love of meeting new people, the love of exploring new places, the love of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and, of course, the love you feel when you have a positive impact on someone’s life. Becoming a volunteer at Youth for Christ Knysna will give you the opportunity to Love.
“Sometimes we want to save the world, make a difference and change lives forever. But often times all we ought to do is love. Love speaks very loud and clear. Louder than many words.”
~ Doralisa Heil (Alumni Volunteer)
Other benefits of volunteering:
Putting our faith into action is at the very heart of what we do at YfC Knysna and as a non-profit organisation, we rely on volunteers to bring the message of Jesus Christ to the communities we serve. By being part of our volunteer outreach, you can make a difference in each and every life you touch.
The youth in our community face a daily battle against poverty, teen pregnancy, lack of quality education, HIV/Aids, gangsterism, alcohol and drug abuse to name a few. At YfC Knynsa we have designed programs to address these negative factors which are robbing our youth of the potential to grow into mature, confident and healthy adults.
Most of our volunteers work within the Team Khanya program across a broad range of projects. These projects include After-school programs, Youth & Holiday Clubs, Soup Kitchens and Family Outreach. All our programs are based on the Balanced Life Concept which promotes physical fitness, social competence, mental stability and spiritual maturity.
This means you will get actively involved with a wide range of activities from preparing food for the soup kitchen, reading stories to the pre-school kids, getting your hands dirty during a Home Make-over or sharing a favourite scripture from the Bible.
KNYSNA
SOUTH AFRICA
THE JEWEL OF THE GARDEN ROUTE
South Africa is proudly known as the rainbow nation with diverse cultures, religions and landscapes. Positioned at the southern-most tip of Africa, we are known for our fantastic summer climate and fairly mild winters. Rather than a 3rd world country, South Africa boasts bustling cities in each of our 9 provinces with Johannesburg and Cape Town being the largest. With world-class airports, shopping centres, and commercial infrastructure, South Africa is the 2nd largest economy in Africa.
Even though 20 years has passed since the abolishment of Apartheid there remains a large disparity between the poor and wealthy. This is particularly evident in Knysna where upmarket housing estates and lavish golf courses border on the townships and informal settlements where the majority of the disadvantaged communities live. These disadvantaged communities are at the heart of all the we do at YFC Knysna.
Knynsa is approximately 5 hours drive (1 ½ hour flight) from Cape Town International Airport. Our closest airport is George which is a mere 45 kilometres away. Knysna forms part of the Garden Route which is a popular tourism destination in South Africa for both local and international tourists. Knysna is situated on the picturesque Knysna Estuary and is surrounded by forest, mountains and the Indian Ocean.
